I don't understand this line of thinking, why would you focus on getting the heart of Law and taking a beating if you can just beat the other guy and take it from his corpse? Any Pirates of the Caribbean fan would know what I am talking about, it is I think what Barbosa said to Jack on searching and taking things from dead corpses.

If Smoker was stronger than Vergo then why not just beat the guy and then take Law's heart from him instead of getting beat up trying to take Law's heart during battle.

Also explained in manga. Being indebted to a pirate is a stain on his naval honor. So if Smoker fought Vergo and was about to win, what’s stopping Vergo from killing law in a last ditch effort? Literally nothing. And yes we saw people think like that because that’s what Caesar tried to do.
