General & Others I challenge worstgen to say good things about Oda/One Piece

#1
I hardly hear anything good said about oda/one piece on this site, so I challenge the people of worstgen to say good things about one piece. It's always just people whining and crying how oda messed up or just people whining if one character has conquerors, just shut the hell up and enjoy the manga you babies

Anyway, say nice things about one piece or oda

Mine:
1. I love the character designs, they're always so either good or completely trash for a reason
2. I love how in one piece for a lot of the characters you can have them as your favorite and they'll still be there, you'll still get screentime, it may not be a lot but you'll still get screentime with most favorite chatscters
3. I love in one piece how everything ties together
4. The world building is really nice
5. I like how oda just has fun with the sbs especially in the dih ones and never really is specific or answers anything that has any effect on the actual story
6. I like how oda just doesn't give a shit about powerscaling and just wants to write his own manga

It has the Admirals in it.

And also HIM.

Aside from that it can be very emotional and funny, some of the characters are great and there's a lot of potential for interesting stuff even in the last stages of it.

I like the colourful and diverse aesthetic as well as the concepts like Den Den Mushi and Devil Fruits.

Powerscaling is inconsistent but frankly better than any western comic I read when I still paid attention to Marvel/DC.

Some parts of the fanbase can be really fun on occasion, I like hanging out here at least mostly.

It's not my favourite piece of fiction ever but it's good.

I love how well paced the story is. After all, a story where there are more mysteries than answers through 1.1k chapters is perfect pacing.

I love how consistently haki is displayed and how consistent it is during fights. It's not like the fanbase debates which lightning means what on a daily and it's not like CoO is a plot convenience

I love how many side characters there are. They're all so useful like Smoothie and Denjiro who are hyped and end up doing so much

I love how little plot armour there is. It's not like Luffy gets an asspull to save him every fight

I love how high the stakes are every arc. It's not like oda creates fakeout deaths every arc leaving the reader feel like a fool for ever being emotionally invested

I love how amazing the fanbase is. It's not like it's a toxic hellhole where there is constant toxicity both in between the fanbase and towards other series fanbases

I love how the female characters are treated. It's not like 90% is used for hentai material with ungodly bodily proportions

This is why One Piece is the greatest story of all time

1. Oda is dedicated to his craft. He's been working almost non-stop for the last 28 years. Putting out this manga almost every week. I don't care who you are, that's impressive.

2. This is one of the most fleshed-out worlds in all of fiction. I mean, given the length, I would hope so. But, it just has a depth of characters and events that's hard to find a match for. It's a playground that you could tell just about any story in, as long as you find the right island to tell it on.

3. Oda is a master at getting us to care about characters. He's a master of giving us interesting backstories. Just look at what Kuma's backstory did for that character's popularity!

4. The art style is completely unique and different from any other shonen manga out there. And it instantly makes One Piece recognizable at a glance.

5. The manga is somehow still capable of finding ways to surprise us. Whether it's big new reveals. Or plot twists we don't see coming. A lot of manga authors get stuck doing the same formula over and over again. And Oda's guilty of that, too. But, Oda is a master of letting the formula work FOR him, instead of against him. He always finds ways to twist the formula JUST enough to keep things interesting.

6. Keeping track of this many plot threads and story lines is impressive. Oda must have a impressive notebook somewhere or a team backing him up. Because a lesser author would forget or abandon certain plotlines, if a manga went this long. But, most of the time, Oda finds ways to bring back plot threads from DECADES ago and use them in interesting ways.

7. All the mysteries and plot threads make this series REALLY fun to speculate about. Because there's still so many ways to combine and intertwine all these ideas that Oda's introduced. With other manga, the story goes in pretty predictable ways. But, it's still kind of hard to see where Oda is going with all this.

8. This manga can be really creative. Whether it's fun new Devil Fruits, or completely bonkers new designs for characters. Even the fights don't always go the way you might expect.

9. Answering fan questions in the SBS. I can't think of many other manga where the author basically gives us entire side-stories in the supplemental material. It just goes to show how rich the world is that he has so many stories that he doesn't even have time to actually draw.

10. Oda is a master at both planning AND improvisation. Oda gets a lot of credit for planning things out since the very beginning. And he deserves a lot of praise for that. More manga authors could stand to plan things out more than they do. But, he's also great at just making things up on the fly and making it feel like it was planned from the beginning. The Worst Generation were famously created in the span of a afternoon. That's just crazy! Oda knows when he needs to plan, and when he just needs to let his creative juices fly free.

11. The Cover Stories. This is something that I don't think I've seen any other author do. But, given us a sequential story for one page, that runs alongside the main story, was kind of genius. It allows you to do so much more, and cover more events, without the work and time it would take to make a whole side story manga. Plus, he takes fan requests for some of them! And that's just cool! It's kind of a holdover from the OLD days, where fans could send in character designs to Kinnikuman and see them drawn by the actual author of the story you love. It's a clever thing he did, and I'd actually like to see more manga do something similar.

12. The story is a lot deeper than most people expect at first glance. We're dealing with a lot of heavy topics in this manga! There's some actual philosophical and moral questions being raised in this manga! For a "silly pirate manga", you could get some real heated discussions about the nature of life, the universe, and everything!

There's plenty of positivity here too, it's just not the overwhelming voice. I see the same nonsense arguments with piratefolk too.

Nobody is more ignorant and hateful than Odas angels hating on the "haters" of the series and Oda ironically lmao.

I'm working on an extremely long breakdown analysing thread that will be such a egregious glaze fest, doughnut factories will get jealous lol. It's gonna take me ages but the payoff should be worth it. There's lots of little things I want to talk about and cherish about the series here.

Kinda depends on the "flow" - some days or weeks you'll see too much unwarranted negativity, othertimes it's at a sensible balance.

Admittedly I see this way more on PF than here. But Piratefolk is unfortunately a Reddit sub so the echo chamber-y aspect is magnified.

But either ways both are way less annoying than the mainsub which seems to recoil with sanctimonious horror if even the slightest criticism is expressed.

Eh i dont know they are quite positive voices here for sure (this chapter multiple people praised how chopper was acting like a real character for example) but overall its very negative.
Like i give you an example: I often read how ass the art his sometimes (which is legit critism) but when the art looks good same people never say shit
It skews quite a bit to the negative, doesnt obviously mean people should not have their own opinions, i think i talked to @Mr. Reloaded about this in a similiar topic

Oda created a story based on light hearted concepts in a genre that is mainly created for a demographic who are going through a phase where they'd want to read anything but that and somehow made it work. Working with themes like, Joy, laughter, immaturity, childishness with a cartoonish, aspirational, non changing-main character is quite difficult; in comparison to working with darker, more intense and shocking-dismal concepts. Which could be mistaken as intellectual, mature-high art by a demographic that has barely experienced life and literature.
