Character Discussion I changed my mind about Big Mom

big mom, she used to be a witch in my eyes but after flashback and what happened recently in chapter 1011, i think she is just a poor little girl that have never grown up, her parents left her, the woman she love the most has died. all she wants to do is just recreate a family where people of all races live happily together, just like her adoptive mother. the wrong thing was only she is too childish

But because she has a soft spot for kids suddenly she's just misunderstood?
Nah fam.
Big Mom is not a Chaotic Evil. She can be a Lawful Evil, but its still Evil.

The problem is she's just a walking plot device.

Her entire character is "DUDE SHE'S INSANE LOL SHE CAN DO ANYTHING LOL LOOK SHE MOVED THE PLOT CONVENIENTLY AGAIN OH LOOK SHE DID IT AGAIN SHE'S INSANE THAT'S WHY SHE'S DOING IT LOL".

That's because nobody ever taught her right from wrong. In fact Mother Carmel enabled her. When Big Mom killed the bear, and thought it was just sleeping, Carmel praised her for it. So she grew up thinking solving things with violence was OK. Doesn't make her not evil, but she's not entirely at fault for how she ended up as an adult.

Oh I understand it.
But then what we think about it depends on which thinker you follow.
"Man is born "good". The society corrupts him."
"Man is man's own wolf".
"All men have two wolves inside them. One good, other bad. What we are depends on which wolf we feed".
etc.

I'm not contesting her background. I'm looking at her present. Big Mom, aside from the hunger things (and now this so called "mother mode"), is a perfectly capable being and should be held responsible for her own actions. She's old AF. It doesn't matter if, in her own mind, what she does is right or wrong. She does what she WANTS and that's it.
And she's evil.
Again, Lawful Evil. Someone who still has a set of moral code, but, in the end, acts ultimately in self benefit.

Well she had enough time to reflect about her crazy nurture in the first place but she didn't change her behaviour. The real Big Mom remains the petty one who committed all those atrocities.

I wouldn't view her as outright innocent but she is a result of her upbringing. She's clearly a mentally unstable individual but that doesn't absolve her of her crimes. Not completely anyway.

She still murders people's relatives for stuff as petty as x person didn't come to my tea party. Her appreciation for getting help from the people in Tama's village is understandable and shows she isn't completely inconsiderate but it makes clear that she's selfish and only views things from her perspective, aiding only those she deems helpful and beneficial to her, rather than assisting out of a sense of kindness.

She still mistreated her kids. Verbally abusing Pudding, physically abusing Chiffon, almost killing that one son that appeared to be dead but was confirmed alive. She also takes people's life-spans before offering protection (though those are contracts they agree, it's still awful).

Her tantrums aren't entirely her fault entirely either since she's unable to control herself when those happen and she's a literal monster physically (Streusen is usually responsible for calming her when those happen) but extra safeguards would make sense.

Overall, she's quite aware of a lot of what she does though that can be attributed a bit to her upbringing and the things she there are things she can't control that aren't completely her fault either. She's still pretty terrible.
