I wage on Imu being a western type of a dragon, salamander style which would fit with the sea devil/serpent theme. The battle between Luffy as the heavenly sun god and Imu as earthly, watery-snake would mirror a common theme in many polytheistic/pagan native cosmologies, a battle between order and chaos, life and death, virtues and vices, and many other polarities.
