As many people have figured out that Lily at one point was part of Joyboy crew, just like Vivi did during Arabasta arc.
During the voice century, when Imu was still a man, he fall in love of Lily but unfortunately Lily didn't like him. One day he found out Joyboy made Lily laugh and they were having a toast and a great time together. In that moment, he thought Joyboy is the man Lily loved which incite a jealousy within Imu.
Imu was so deeply jealous of Joyboy that he started a plot to destroy Joyboy. How did he do it? He impersonate him, the man that Lily loved (both of them have similar eyes). The huge strawhats in Marie Jois is one of proof.
Imu not just tricked Lily, he even tricked Joyboy allies telling them he is the real Joyboy. So Joyboy lost the war. At the moment Joyboy fells onto the ground, he raised his left hand with the letter D written on it. There Lily finally realized Imu is an impersonator.
Imu built a castle on top of the red line called the Pangaea castle (the name of Joyboy's dream, super continent)
Imu even named the place called Marie Jois which means Marry Joy in English. (marry = marier, Joy = jois). You get it. This is a place Imu made for Lily to marry him as Joyboy.
When Imu wanted to proposed to Lily, she told him that she doesn't like him because she is a lessbian. (Lily in Japanese is 百合, it's a name of a flower and also be translated as Yuri which means Lessbian)
In order to not Implicate Arabasta into the matter, Lily disappeared leaving a letter to her relative descendant.
Lily then went to a remote Island to create a Kuja Island which named after herself, Amazon Lily.
Imu turned himself into a woman using Hormone Hormone Devil Fruit. (Ivankov turned a man into a woman in Impeldown). In his eternal sorrow, he wore a wedding gown as if one day Lily will reincarnate and come back to him, so Lily can accept him and finally marry her as a woman. (Gorosei refer Imu as a man)
