I like how frequently that happens in the verse but sometimes is not a big deal

Realistically? Yeah, probably. But in the story it's pretty clear that it's just a visual way of saying "oh, that hurt like shit". Even if the character brushes it off afterwards, it tells us that whatever hit them was no joke, and they felt the pain of it.
