Questions & Mysteries Is it weird that Emet can swim?

#1
Okay, to be fair, the title is a little misleading. I don't think it's actually that weird that the Ancient Robot can swim. We've seen Vegapunk's own Vegaforce robot work in water, so there's no real reason Emet can't work in water, too.

No, what I find weird is more the situation surrounding it getting it's power. Emet seemed to gain power while in the water by hearing Luffy and Bonney's Drums of Liberation.

Think about that for a second. This robot just received power that's being generated by a pair of Devil Fruits through the ocean water. The same water that's supposed to nullify the powers of Devil Fruits. How does that work?

How is it that energy that's being produced by Devil Fruits is able to be transferred through water when water nullifies Devil Fruit powers?

Now, maybe this is just a oversight. Something Oda didn't think all the way through. But, maybe not. Maybe this is hinting at...something. I'm just not sure what.

Are the Drums of Liberation not technically a Devil Fruit power? The problem with this is, you almost definitely need a Devil Fruit to alter your body enough to produce the effect. It feels like the Drums should be at least related to Devil Fruit powers, in some way. Though, since it's basically just sound waves, maybe it doesn't matter how it's produced after it travels through the air and water?

Is this a loophole to the water weakness, somehow? Could the Ancient Civilization have actually used this loophole to transfer energy through the water, for some reason?

Could this mean that the Drums of Liberation might be travelling down to the bottom of the ocean to the original surface of the planet (or maybe even beyond)? Could Luffy's Drums be powering something at the bottom of the sea? Maybe some Ancient Machine that's causing the sea-quakes as it powers on and off as Luffy uses Gear 5?

I just find it a little weird that a energy source that's being produced by a Devil Fruit isn't effected by Devil Fruit's usual natural weakness. It just feels like water should also cancel out Gear 5's energy transfer to the robot, but since it doesn't I have to wonder what that means.

Oh, that's actually a good point. Especially the part about Aokiji.

The other examples feel less applicable because they happen so fast they might not have enough time for the water to "break down" the Devil Fruit effects. Short bursts over a short amount of time. For example, once Oven stopped pouring his energy into the ocean, it stopped boiling fairly quickly (chapter 887)

But, Aokiji and his ice bridge that can last a week (c 319) actually shows that Devil Fruit powers can effect water and retain that effect over a relatively long period of time. It's only over the surface of the water, but it's still directly effecting water itself. And doesn't require constant use of the power to maintain. From that example, it appears that water doesn't have any sort of natural resistance to Devil Fruit "energy" or effects.

So, no, it's not weird that Emet can swim. I just forgot a pretty memorable moment from the story that proves me wrong. It kind of feels like we don't have that many examples of Devil Fruit users effecting water in this story, and I forgot the few that we actually had. I'm just completely off base with this entire thread. Still feels weird that water weakens Devil Fruit users and not the energy that they produce, but it's been pretty consistent throughout the manga, I guess. I'm just wrong. Mea culpa.
