Character Discussion Is Kong’s position largely honorary?

Kong is commander in chief of the WG. But from the looks of it, this seems to be a useless position.

Because Kong isn’t actually shown giving major directives to the marines or cipher pol. Rather, it seems to be the gorosei that do this.

When Sengoku and Garp went to retire, while they gave up most of their responsibilities they previously had, they weren’t actually allowed to leave the marines. They were just given less demanding jobs.

I think the same is probably true for Kong. Kong is likely retired but given how strong he is, the WG probably wasn’t willing to let him go. So they gave him some bullshit desk job.

While yes, technically he is Akainu’s superior, he never actually gives major directives to the marines because all of the major stuff comes from the gorosei.

Overall, we are in the final saga and Kong seems to be irrelevant. I do think we will ultimately see him fight in the final war. Somebody needs to be opponents for Garp and Sengoku.

But he clearly isn’t a major player like his rank would suggest.

If there was more interservice rivalry between the Marines and Cipher Pol, Kong would be the one to keep both the Fleet Admiral and Director in line.

....but they haven't, so that's that.
