You might think Kid is just a mindless hothead, but when Oda drew him as a child, he presented him as a sort of mechanic. Kid might knew one or two things about metal even before he ate his fruit.
He is somewhat similar to Luffy. Supernovas, only captains with another supernova as first mate, only ones back then with conquerors, only ones back then with 300+m boutny, only ones who didn't bow to Kaido.
Luffy has a famous grandfather, the hero of the navy. Perhaps Kid has an equally famous grandfather, one that was also to busy to really care for him.
Lots of people have speculated that Captain John was his father. No idea if this is true. But Vegapunk is too old to be his father anyway. Why Vegapunk? VegaPUNK. Kid is also a punk. Plus his interest in robots as a child.
