General & Others JJK missed opportunities and underdeveloped plot lines thread

#21
My biggest gripe with this series would be the culling games. I always felt like it was a very unnatural and contrived direction the story went into, not to mention how confusing and fast-paced those chapters leading up to it were.

Far too many new characters were being introduced that I just didn't care about, like did anyone really care about Reggie or Naoya returning?

Gege likely just wanted to do a sort of tournament arc post-Shibuya where he could showcase different characters fighting but it just came out of nowhere and didn't have the substance needed.

This is a 400-500 chapter shounen being rushed to fit under 300.

I don't think it's accurate to say JJK missed anything. It's more so that Gege chose differently - and badly, imo.
How so?

I think Gege always planned on this being a 200-300 chapters series. There's a relatively small cast of characters and number of plotlines that needed to happen, just compare JJK's school roster to that of MHA for instance or the fact that Sukuna was already in possession of 15 fingers around Shibuya.

Certain parts are indeed rushed but not to the extent that this series should have been hundreds of chapters longer.

Half the world building and more than half the exposition is communicated through narration in textboxes.

Gege introduces and discards paper thin concepts seemingly on a whim and never stopped to expound or let anything breathe.

However many chapters he planned to go for isn't relevant to however many chapters the story actually needed. Stories change as they develop, especially in a weekly serialised manga.

You can accept this rationalisation if you want, but JJK as is, is a skeleton with barely enough sinew to stand. There's far too little meat on the bones, and JJK will age very poorly because of it. It already has.
