That's the problem with the English translation. You can never tell when Oda means King in English (キング - kingu) or king in Japanese (王 - ou). Here Luffy asks: 王? Where my favorite character's alias name is キング.
Though I do think King may be a descendent of one of Joy Boy's nakama, just like Shirahoshi was with the name running in her family as a secret.
