Although not specified, Kaido’s main goal was retaking Wano because it’s his ancient homeland. Although fail of a leader of Wano and the Beast Pirates (thanks to bad writing) it is without a doubt that Kaido is a descendant of the Ancient Giants thanks to his appearance and giant size, and the most obvious his horns. It’s already been stated years ago that he's a “creature” and not a human. Is it solely because of his DF? The DF is there just for the power boost, however the thing what distinguishes Kaido from the Ancient Gaints appearance is his human appearance and this proves that Kaido’s family is a mix either between Ancient Giant and Human or Ancient Giant with Normal (Humanoid) Giant and it’s been proven that giants can interbreed with other races (I mean every race in OP can interbreed) such as the Hybrids shown (fishmen-giants) in the Long Ring Long Land arc, making Kaido himself a Hybrid.
This also backs up why he’s so incredibly powerful and impossible to kill or do damage to him without Ryou because whatever he has in his mixed genes has made him a monster. And it’s not solely because of his Ogre blood that he has within him, because we saw Little Oars getting injured in Marineford. For now, the only pure Ancient Giant still left is Little Oars (the world of OP is big so there are other Ancient Giants left), while Kaido and Yamato are hybrids, with Yamato being more human than her father (evident that her mother is human), the only thing that she carries are the horns and the height.
When Kaido took over Wano, he settled on Onigashima, making it his stronghold. He could’ve settled in the Flower Capital not that anyone could hurt him but specifically on Onigashima, in the skull of an Ancient Giant lying on the island. Why? I can’t point out anything other than finding more about his race’s past (this is just my pure speculation it could be for another reason for all we know). The island had a different name before as stated by Marco, however Kaido decided to call it “Onigashima” which translates to “Demon/Ogre Island", I guess?
The giant skull is bigger than Oars’s head bringing up the possible theory that more than 800 years ago Wano was inhabited by the Ancient Giants with that one main giant combining the various islands with different climates making it the Land of Wano. Oar’s body lied dead in Wano with Moria digging it up and taking it to Thriller Bark (I don’t how he’s done it, but he’s done it). Also, giant animals have been found on Wano making them food for the Giants, with the Wild Boar that Oden fought being the last example. The Dragon that Ryuma cut in half 500 years ago.
Whatever happened when the World Government was formed, we can guess that the Ancient Giants have been scattered across the world with many being genocide (there’s no doubting that that the WG feared them), some still being pure amongst them, while others interbred with other races. There’s also something that has cause the Ancient Giants to get smaller, the fact that Oars and Little Oars are way smaller than the Giants before. The Numbers are failed Ancient Giant experiments of Punk Hazard over a century ago, when Kaido found out, he bought them.
It is possible that Kaido holds a deep hatred for the WG making his race go extinct, whatever it is, I hope it gets shown soon after his battle with Luffy in flashbacks.
