General & Others Koby is one of the best characters in OP for this

I feel like a lot of people shit on Koby for this scene. Because he cries and looks ugly. But tbh with everything happening in the Middle East, this scene has really hit home for me.

At this point, Israel has successfully killed the leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah, basically the main perpetrators of October 7th. Yet much like Akainu, Netanyahu refuses to end the war, sacrificing the lives of Israeli soldiers and hostages in the process(not to mention countless more Palestinians).

This scene is especially impactful for me, because I’m an American and I work for a weapons company. Like Koby, I’ve found myself on the side of an overall shitty and corrupt institution. I guess I’m glad that Oda created the character of Koby. He shows that it’s possible to be a good person, even if your country is ass.

There is a limit to comparing an ongoing genocide to a comicbook you’re supposed to read while taking a shit
That's actually really pertinent.

Aside from the fact that the domination relationship is very different (Pirates have an equal way to fight contrary to Palestinians and Israel is a colonizer) the dezhumanization process and the refusal to accept the end of prejudice makes Akainu very similar to Netanyahou.

It must be really hard to be a jewish and see someone make a genocide on your name.

For me, this is one of the best and powerfull scene of One Piece. Koby is literally a hero for what he did right there. People who trash on this scene understand nothing to One Piece.

This is a case where talking about politics is important to understand One Piece and reading One Piece to understand politics.

I think that, on the other hand, many pirates would harm others, but also, Akainu does not need to take their life away, or to have marines help him, he could let the men lead by him go to safety and handle the pirates himself,

For the record

I don’t think the Gaza war is somehow comparable to Marineford.

I just think that the dynamic between Koby and Akainu reflects irl truths that are present in society. Akainu supports a war to the detriment of his own people due to his ideological reasons and personal grievances.

Akainu is reflective of irl politicians who push endless wars. Netanyahu, Putin, even George Bush.

Koby is a righteous citizen who works for a corrupt government because he wants to do good. He reflects countless people irl.

It’s because Koby is weak and Akainu is strong and some fans purely care about powerscaling
