Speculations Kuma became a cyborg to prolong his life. The Kumaphim becomes Kuma theory, has gained more weight.

One of the biggest questions right now, is how did Bonney get cured of her Sapphire disease? One of the obvious answers is that Kuma took away Bonney's disease, and took it in himself. The only thing that makes this iffy, is that if he could do that, then why didn't he do that instead of looking for a cure for it, for all those years, so people are skeptical of this being the case. But I think the simple answer to that, is that it just wasn't the right time yet for Kuma to take the disease from Bonney. If Kuma had taken the disease from Bonney too early, then it would have limited his ability to protect her, and to go out into the World and look for a cure. So I think in the beginning, his original plan was to keep her sheltered in darkness, so he could search the World for a cure.

As time passed however, Kuma learned the devastating truth, that even if he kept Bonney out of the Sunlight, she would eventually succumb to the disease. I think Kuma used time to scour the World, in a one last ditch attempt to find a cure for Bonney, and that is when Dragon introduced him to Vegapunk. (Remember Dragon said he would use every doctor at his disposal to find a cure for Bonney, and Dragon at some point became acquainted with Vegapunk.) I believe that even with Vegapunk's Genius, he was still unable to find a cure for this disease, but he did however theorize another method. What if he turned Bonney's entire body into a cyborg, thus protecting it from the sunlight, and prolonging the spread of the disease. Kuma however wouldn't go for this, because he's a father. Turning Bonney into a cyborg at such a young age, would limit her growth forever.

It would be at this point that Kuma decided that this was the best chance he had to save Bonney, while still being able to search for a cure. He would take the disease from Bonney, and have Vegapunk modify himself into a cyborg instead. Now of course the World Government wouldn't openly allow for Vegapunk to just help a former member of the Revolutionary Army, so that's where Bonney being a captive comes into play. The agreement would be something along the lines of, they would allow for Vegapunk to turn Kuma into a cyborg, as long as he agrees to be apart of their experiments. And to ensure he doesn't just get the modifications and escape, Bonney had to stay with them, until everything was complete. So far it adds up.

I think the biggest problem Vegapunk found however, was that even though the modifications done to Kuma would prolong the survivability of his body, in the end his mind would ultimately succumb to the Sapphire disease. This was the final obstacle that Vegapunk couldn't overcome. No matter how much you can modify a persons body, you can't modify their brain, and have them still be them. It was at this point, Vegapunk and Kuma made the decision, that Kuma would expel his own consciousness from his body, in hopes to one day bring him back.

There is a huge problem with this though. With Kuma's ability, someone has to "accept" whatever it is Kuma expels from a persons body, into their own, so even if Kuma's consciousness is sitting in limbo, Vegapunk would still need to create a vessel that would willingly accept it. This takes us back to the beginning of the Arc to a little bit of somewhat "throwaway" information that we learned about Vegapunk's creations. No matter how many creations Vegapunk has made, he is still unable to fully control their emotions. Oda put this information in the manga for a reason, and I believe it's how he can explain how Vegapunk can't just order Kumaphim to accept Kuma's consciousness. Even though the Serpahim follow orders without question, you can't make them do EVERYTHING you want them to do.

But there is also something else interesting that we've all forgotten about, and that is that the Serpahim, to some degree, since being clones of the originals, mimic the personalities, and traits of the originals. This was made apparent when Boaphim got struck with love sickness, when meeting Luffy, and now acts towards him like the original Boa Hancock does.

So what would happen if Kumaphim inadvertently touches Kuma's consciousness, and experiences his memories? Wouldn't it stand to reason, that Kumaphim, being a clone of the original Kuma, would have that kind and compassionate nature kick in, with his desire to protect and help people? He'll see how his original was shackled as a slave as a kid, much like himself is now, and see that this is an opportunity for him to break the control the World Government has over him, and he'll be able to help and protect people, much like his suppressed personality wants to, but can't because of the mind control? This could be the catalyst for Kumaphim to willingly accept Kuma's memories.

Right now Oda is showing us, that the death of Kuma's original body is near. It's looks like it's gearing up to be that Kuma is looking for the Celestial Dragon that kidnapped Ginny, and once he finds him, he will take his life, and as soon as that is completed. Kuma's life will also be forfeit. But it would be poetic, that as Kuma's original body fades out of existence as he exacts revenge, his clone inherits his consciousness to arrive just in time to save Bonney, thus making everything come full circle.

The foundation is there to make it all work, and I really hope that's where Oda is going with all this. Otherwise I just don't see a reason as to why Kuma's consciousness is even a thing in the first place. Just so Bonney could see what he went through? Kind of a flimsy reasoning for it. There has to be something bigger to it, otherwise it's just a wasted opportunity.

(Bonus Points)

With Kumaphim becoming the original Kuma, the 2,9 2,9, Gorowase theory might just become complete. People might argue that if Kuma's body is destroyed, then the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi will manifest itself into a new Devil Fruit and disappear, but would that really be the case if Kuma's consciousness is still intact? Theoretically, the two should still be linked.
