Normally you would only lose your fruit in death but by some strange property of the nika nika no mi Luffy might remain alive. Oda can't fool me when Kaidou made that comment about only Haki can make you the strongest that was a direct challenge to Luffy's protagonist agenda. Luffy might become a normal human and have to build his Haki up to be pirate king.
Of course in the end what ever final boss Luffy has to fight Luffy will be about to lose and re enter g5 to everybody's surprise. While I think this is the direction Oda will go I would prefer him not to. It would be a roundabout way to make suspense and waste time but right now their are plenty of people who think Luffy is too strong.
Not going to lie it would be interesting. By highest of estimates he's still somewhere around Yonkou level without even needing to be rubber. This would put Luffy down to where Buggy is as far as Yonkou position. It would even be funny to see the crew react to the fact that Luffybis no longer a df user but still doesn't know how to swim lol.
