Straw can be turned into paper, and a Vivre Card is made of special paper. Therefore, Luffy's straw hat could potentially work like a compass, similar to a Vivre Card..

I don't remember clearly, but I once saw an anime scene (maybe in a One Piece opening song) where Luffy's straw hat strangely flew through the air, as if it was aiming toward a specific destination...

Yeah this is pretty cool. Surprisingly the first theory I've seen involving Luffy's hat.

I hope that paper is damage resistant though considering all the scraps that hat's been in.
