When you go deep into marineford , you realize that it was a combination of mind games and a battle between the ideologies , the alliance was fighting for themselves and ace of course but they represent all pirates , that's why crocodile fighting for them was very meaningful .
At first let's talk about the marines and WG motivations ,
\-Prove a point by executing ace by their own terms .
\-ending the blood line of roger
\-killing whitebeard
Whitebeard as a pirate didn't do many crimes , he didn't care about the one piece , so danger wise he was a normal pirate who searches for treasures and robs the rich people because you know .. they can be robbed , of course he have the strength to conquer the world and find the one piece , but what really made his death important for the government is his value as a symbol for pirates , whitebeard takes over islands , even if he is defending them , in the eyes of the other people , he is taking control of these islands ,
for other pirates they think , "if he can do all of this , if he can gain all of this power , why don't i try to be like him ? or even surpass him " , Crocodile didn't necessarily respect whitebeard , he wanted to surpass him , if he died , then crocodile and other pirates will begin question their ideologies .if this is the top of all pirates , and he gets humiliated by the marines , then they really control the seas .
So the marines strategy had many layers but it was specifically to surround the pirates in the bay then manipulate squard to stab whitebeard and turn the allies on him , Sengoku said that he underestimated whitebeard , he thought that his pride will make his anger take over him ,he didn't know how smart is WB , whitebeard made the perfect move in a situation like this , killing squard will mean losing the war and maybe Whitebeard losing his name that was up there for decades .
before his death , whitebeard said that he isn't interested in the one piece or anything related to it , but yet he did the same thing as roger, but no one asks himself why ?
Pirates lost everything , but Whitebeard was too proud to leave the world without a win , so he confirmed that One piece is real , he knew that this will make the pirates more active , that this will bring more terror to the world and lots of people will hurt , but these are the characters of one piece , they are mostly selfish ,
Roger and Whitebeard understood what humans need , something to fight for , a meaning to their life , so they used this against the marines , Whitebeard basically reset all the WG plans , they killed the most powerful man , who wasn't really danger , but his will and his value as a symbol is still there , then we see punch of pirates preparing to set sail while people are celebrating ,
I don't think that whitebeard hated the marines , it was just a personal win ,
i think it is very great writing that the theme of belief and ideological battle was involved in every major plot point of the arc , that's what made it very unique .
