Newgate led Oden join... because Oden's willingness to give up his own life for a woman, reminded Newgate of Rocks dying to save his family.
I believe Newgate always knew Teach was Rocks' child, or at least learned eventually.
Newgate protected Teach because he was Rocks' son: and this makes Teach's betrayal all the more bitter.
Whitebeard was trying to protect both Teach, and then Ace.
What happened is the saddest fate for Whitebeard: watching the Sons of the men he respected, whom he raised as his own children, come to fight each other.

Oden was a true man, who would sacrifice himself to save the weak/innocent.
While Rocks said he only went for his wife and kid, I think he was lying: Rocks said he trusted the Davy Clan to protect them.
Rocks loved the Davy Clan and God Valley.
Rocks died trying to protect his homeland.
Newgate spent his whole time protecting/sending money to Sphinx: I believe Rocks helped defend Sphinx, too. Newgate probably had Sphinx as his base of operations, but, then, Rocks showed up, and recruited him. "Vohahaha, you're strong, but, you can't stop the Government forever: join my Crew, and I promise, I'll protect Sphinx, no matter what!"
