The two things don't have to mutually exclusive imo.
Sabo should get a brief fight/skirmish with Akainu, and I'd like to see Luffy ending the fight.

It does make sense.

I seriously doubt that gears + awakening alone for example would of sufficed also given how lethal Akainu's devil fruit can prove on top of his admiral stats, and Akainu never displayed his presumable awakening mode.

ACoC had Luffy spiking his power level immensely and this is very visible.

unfortunetly luffy doesnt have squardo as a crew member to backstab him:milaugh:

That time akainu shitted on ace ability for being only fire while he himself is superior magma...but now when haki has become clear factor here, it might be possible for oda to make it happen. Sabo has inherited ace will and also regret dying from not being there at MF is clear implication for him to be akainu's opponent.

-carries on ace will as much as sabo

Luffy did it only using his willpower so magma which is cooler although more viscous would make Luffy defend just like dis:usosmug:
