General & Others Oda does not deserve to be entirely blamed for One Piece's bad writing,some of his editors make bad suggestions too

One Piece has had many editors during its run some amazing and some awful.

One editor suggested that Ace should live Marineford (Terrible idea)

But this is nowhere near as bad as Odas' worst editor Hattori or whatever his name was, don't even care if I wrote that right

Shit, what was his name. Naito? I recall one of his editors was REALLY into Carrot and went about diversity in the OP world by wanting to explore what would happen if a Human and Mink had a child together. The man was a known furry lover and probably why Carrot stuck around so long. Fittingly, he was Editor just as Carrot had this entire push of sailing with the SHs and her entire voyage with them was basically over when he left and a new editor took over. 2016 to 2019 he was the editor. Zou and Whole Cake fit into that. Basically, he was no longer involved with Wano and at that point, Carrot was stuck there as a tagalong.

Oda: I'm drawing this stuff cause I want the readers to enjoy it. And the very first reader is my editor of course. So the first step is to make sure the editor enjoys the next chapter. So sometimes the manga can evolve to reflect the editors skin. So when I drew something with a little extra skin, Hattori really liked that.
Hattori: After we were done eating, we went back to the studio. That's when I got the lecture. "This is what One Piece is, this is how it works." Here's the stories of the manga, here are the contents, here are the sub plots at play. This is how the One Piece world works. This is how I view the series. This is the part the kids like. This is the stuff we do that gets a really good reaction.

Back in pre time skip, when editors did have some semblance of power over one piece manga, they absolutely made good suggestions

The supernovas were an editor's suggestion to spice up sabaody
shank losing his arm was an editor's suggestion (tho many people might not see it as a goody thing)
The shuchibukai were a suggestion from an editor iirc
vivi becoming such an important character. ooda only planned for her to be miss wednesday initially. editor suggested to make her vivi.


The shichibukai suggestion alone shaped one piece into what it is today. So many op arcs revolve around shichibukai and/or the supernova.


The editors are a big part of what made pre skip good.
And following it's success, oda became too big, and editors gradually lost their say. Becoming yes men and relegated to just praising oda instead of doing their jobs.


You can blame editors for being yes men. But it's mostly because of oda's own ego not allowing them to be anything else.

Amazon lily is like the one arc that oda actually drew some variation of women instead of making everyone a nami or robin clone.
and oda is a big fucking pervert. he wasn't drawing "sexy" scenes cause of one editor lmao. man was and is a horny clown.

Sure.

Oda is under a lot of editorial pressure, even it simply boils down to using a fanservice chapter to sell a movie (cough cough Red cough cough), but at the end of the day, Oda's name is on the tankobons, Oda is the author, and Oda will be remembered as the mind behind One Piece, not the constantly changing executives at his elbow, so all the criticism, deservedly or not, will be leveled at Oda.

He is the only one responsible for his future legacy.
