Theory Oda will play around with the idea of Shanks being a rat during Elbaf.

Shanks left from Elbaf to chase the One Piece, now what possibilities does this open for the narrative?

I think we will tackle multiple plotlines in Elbaf, and I feel in most of these plotlines Oda will establish elements that might lead back to Shanks, be it red herrings or not.
Oda could leave Elbaf in a state where we as readers could always suspect for Shanks being an indirect cause to the state of the island.

Oda playing around that way could allow us to learn more about Shanks and maybe his lineage without directly having Shanks in Elbaf and saving him for Lough Tale, so once we get to Shanks we as fans will have an unclear picture of Shanks. Unclear about whether his alignments are friendly or evil.

For the end of the story I still think that Shanks overall is one of the better guys, but still having this ambiquity building up could be one of the big goals that Oda plans for Shanks.

What do you guys think?

Good point, still it should be obvious to an attentive reader that Shanks is not a villain of this story. But it seems his relatives, the Figarland Family, are which may he source of some of the ambiguity

yes I think the Figarland family will play a huge role in Elbaf. That's how alot of the ambiguity will come from. We don't know yet whether Shanks has contact to his family, but the scene in Mary Geoise did imply a possibility.

So much is already going on and it will just be more from now on lol
