Character Discussion Oden was inspired in Luffy, Zoro and Sanji.

So i don't know if somebody noticed this, but Oden basically exists to contemple Luffy, Zoro and Sanji.

Oden is incredibly free spirited, one of his main goals was make Wano open to the whole world, and also set sail and found out about the world itself. One of the main reasons Luffy wants to take Kaido down so much is to see the people of Wano free, Luffy loves that freedom, especially to the people who are kind to him and are willing to share their food, even if they usually starve on that country. Every place Oden saw when he set sail, he wanted to set his foot on it to explore, very very Luffy like.

The parallels to Zoro are pretty straight forward, from saving and meeting Hyiori, to getting Enma and start a journey to handle the sword and its will, carrying hate for Orochi and Kaido is also a part of that. Oden is also one of the few strong swordsman who uses more than 1 blade and has a "2 sword style", it's not 3 like Zoro, but i think you got my point.

As for Sanji, we not only get a parallel to his kindness even towards the people he doesn't know completely but somehow managed to get a glimpse of who they really are (Viola, Pudding, Gin, Luffy, Zoro and so on), but preparing food for them is a core character trait of Sanji that Oden shares. Oden usually prepares "Oden" (its even in his name), like when he met Inu, Neko and Kawamatsu when they were child. Everyone in Whitebeard and Roger's crews were showed to absolutely love the food he makes. Oden's literal introduction has him boiling "Oden" over someone elses father's remains as a tribute.

It also shows how Oda sees most Chefs in One Piece as skilled fighters. Zeff was a Captain, Oden is known as a legend and he was praised by his cooking, even Killer is a cook. But Sanji is the ultimate of them, preparing a dish is a part of his fighting style and a core of who he is.

Plus, Oden is quite a gentleman as well, he gave up on his tough journey of joining the Whitebeard Pirates by drowing in the sea water to save a lady who was getting assaulted by some badly intentioned dudes and spelled exactly what Sanji would say, that enough made Whitebeard admire him much more, pretty similar to how Luffy sees Sanji. Usually, every girl Sanji saves, helps and gets involved with usually end up having a much bigger relevance than it seems initially, including at helping the Strawhats, the same applies to Toki here, since she an important part of the Wano arc by being Oden's wife, Momo's mother, having a Devil Fruit capable of sending people to the future and encouraging Momo and the Scabbards to do what they have to do.

I didn't detailed everything enough at all (it wouldn't fit here), but my point is that its perfect how much these stuff are tied to each other, not because Oden is just one character who shares core traits with other 3, but it shows how Oda sees these 3 characters so proeminently in the course of the manga that its impossible to imagine One Piece without them. You can only expect this to get more and more clear from now on as the manga progresses

I can definitely see some parallels from what you mention, but what would be the narrative purpose of this? Something like carrying on his will through new character who represent different aspects of who he was?

Yh noticed this a long time ago. He has Luffy's adventure passion, Sanji's cooking passion and Zoro's sword fighting passion.

Its why Momo has a connection to all 3 of them as well.

Luffy is his Saviour
Sanji is his Father Figure
Zoro is his Mentor/Teacher.

Interesting text. I can see the characteristics you mentioned in Oden.

I just don't think Sanji would be stupid enough to dance naked for years; If Sanji were in Oden's place he would certainly have found a way to outsmart Orochi and Kaidou.

Basically, Sanji makes up for his unconditional gentleness to women with his ruthlessness to men who really do not deserve sympathy, except when it comes to hunger. The way how he didn't lower his guard to Jabura is a good example of it. And another one is how badly he treated Caesar Clown. So here is where Sanji is different from Oden, who is too naive in relation to everyone somehow indiscriminately, which is the reason why he allowed himself to be fooled by Orochi, not only after Orochi began to rule, but even before, when Orochi kept begging Oden to give him money so many times.

Yeah i agree 100%, Oden has his own character traits, no doubt about that, but my point here really is the importance of the Trio in such an important character for the events of this arc.

The most iconic things about Luffy, Zoro and Sanji were really important for Oda at creating Oden

Thats actually a quite accurate definition

Reminds me of Sanji saving Momo and praising how he "dropped his name" on chapter 988

I think calling Sanji a father figure to Momo is an insult to Kinemon. I see Sanji more as an older brother figure. Sanji’s brothers constantly berated him for being weak, but Sanji never does that to Momo. He always has an encouraging word for Momo when the latter is feeling down.

Actually you right, Sanji would fit a brother figure better

What Sanji's brothers did to Sanji is an exaggerated example of precisely what older brothers commonly do to younger brothers; They prey on the weaker one in order to feel better.

So that's actually a reason not to see Sanji as Momo's brother; Sanji acted literally as Momo's super hero, which is certainly not what an older brother does, especially because younger brothers don't want to have the older brothers as their heroes anyway, but normally want to be at least in an equal position regardless of the difference of age.

Sanji is more like Momo's cool and reliable uncle, to be honest.

I know Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji are Sanji’s brothers, but your description of them reminds me of elementary school playground bullies. I don’t imagine that older brothers pick on younger ones just to feel better about themselves. Now, my thoughts could be unfounded because my older brother never bullied me. But our dynamic is different because I am his younger sister.

If Sanji also represents his cool uncle, then I wonder what sort of shenanigans the two would find themselves in?

Well, it depends on the family.
And of course, the way how brothers prey on younger ones is generally not as bad as school bullies, and it's more subtle (which is why I called Sanji's case exaggerated), but it still occurs, though not necessarily. And the lower is the level of culture of the older brother in question, the higher is the chance of it happening.

And yes, if it's an older brother and a younger sister, then it's by far a lot less likely to occur.

Well if anything Luffy isn't the sole character with a strong adventure passion
