I suggest it came from a primeval time, the 1st world. Therefore, it is as ancient as it can be. Furthermore, if it was that far back that it existed, they were likely practicing mysticism and not science.
However, in the 2nd world, the original mystic principles they covered in the 1st world were repurposed toward science. This is why they have scientific looking technology.
