It is highly likely that Whitebeard had latent degeneracies carrying in his DNA, and those awakened and manifested within Weevil, creating some kind of One Piecish equivalent of Down Syndrome or Autism. Stussy maybe thought that Edward Newgate would be ashamed of his son, knowing the status of that man. Stussy saw only one option..."trying to fix" Weevil and make him carry proudly the name of Edward, walking in the footsteps of his father. That is how much Buckingham Stussy adored Whitebeard, considering never to put his name into disgrace.
Maybe Stussy was the reason, Whitebeard decided against having women in his crew. He experienced love, but for himself he learned that having a wife and kids would not be the kind of family he enjoyed to be with. This goes hand in hand with the statement that Oda made about mothers. Mothers stand for the opposite of adventure. Whitebeard having his wife on the ship would mean the opposite of adventure, that is why they broke up.
