What is the purpose of the Void Century? The World Government is a global organization with the literal Devil as their leader, why should they care if people know they defeated a great kingdom to establish their empire? It has been shown countless times in the manga that countries go to war all the time; one side will win, and the loser is either destroyed or absorbed. Some may say that they are hiding the fact that they are responsible for the flooding of the world, but why would they care about that? It seems like that knowledge would just build up the power base and control that they have over the population. So, if these reasons are ruled out, we are left with one other obvious option, they are erasing Joy Boy from history and not the kingdom or their actions.
Okay, so they are specifically targeting the lifetime of Joy Boy as history that can not be spoken, written, or remembered. Why? What could the purpose be? Joy Boy was the enemy of the 20 kingdoms during the Void Century, so perhaps the loss of his memory was integral to defeating him. If we look to Dr. Hiriluk, he stated that a man dies once he is forgotten. What if that was literal for Joy Boy. What if, in the past, you could stab Joy Boy, you could burn him, you could beat him to a bloody pulp; but as long as his followers remembered, and more importantly, believed in him, he would regenerate and stand back up to continue fighting. Then the Void Century starts to make sense as a counter measure. It is a symptom of the fear that the World Government still holds. Somehow, they were able to erase the memory of Joy Boy from his friends and that is how he finally died for good.
I think that we have seen Luffy use this power before as well. Go re-read 426 and 427, Lucci won the fight and Luffy was done. It wasn't until Usopp affirmed his belief in Luffy that he was able to stand and win. Gear 5 played out the same way, but to much more of an extreme. Luffy was dead. It wasn't until after Nami put her life on the line by confronting Kaido with her firm belief in Luffy that he was able to reawaken.
But, even though the memory of Joy Boy was forgotten, his will has been passed down through the ages. I think that this is where the D. comes in. The world government was able to remove the memory of Joy Boy from his followers, maybe similar to Pudding, but what if his will lived on in their Dreams? His followers would still dream of Joy Boy, even though they could no longer remember who he was or why they dreamed of him. Maybe that is what made the Davy clan so dangerous, they were the ones who could still dream of Joy Boy, even 800 years later. That could also be why Teach doesn't sleep, he has rejected Joy Boy and blames him for the state of the world. He lost his father because Joy Boy lost. His home was destroyed because Joy Boy lost.
