He also needs to kill someone's loving father before the eyes of the child, while Imu keeps the Strawhats busy. He already talked about his thorns killing parents trying to save their child. Of course Kuma will flince when Sommers wraps his thorns around Bonney. Thorns, just like Kuma and Sommers himself have strong symbolic christian meaning. Kuma was a king once. Sommer's will make fun of this by putting a crown of thorns on his head. Kuma dying from the thorns will be a testament of his love for Bonney, as the thorns do damage relative to the love the rescuer has for the victim, and prove that Kuma is the "real" father, even though they are not genetically related.
