This is just a random thought that occurred to me. And to be clear, I'm not even 100% sure Rocks is actually dead. Sengoku seems to think he's dead (Chapter 957). But, I don't know. I still have my suspicions. This IS One Piece after all. From what I understand, technically, the phrase Sengoku uses is "left this world". So, it's possible that's actually literal and Rocks "left this world"...by literally going to another planet, or possibly falling into the Underworld underground. (And I'm still keeping my eye on you, Big News Morgans!)
But, let's just assume that Rocks is actually dead. How does he end up dying on God Valley? Well, I mean, EVERYONE was there! Garp, Roger, Garling...I honestly wouldn't even be surprised if the Gorosei or Imu were there, too. There's a lot of people who could have killed Rocks. Maybe even Shakky herself, if he got too "friendly" with her.
But, what if Rocks didn't die in battle? We know that the Celestial Dragons had a few different "treasures" for those competing in the Games at God Valley. Since Shakky was captured, we know they weren't ALL Devil Fruits. But, we know there were at least two Devil Fruits as prizes. Kaido's Dragon Fruit, and Kuma's Paw Fruit. So, there is a chance there were other Fruits there as prizes in some of those treasure chests, as well. I think you might be able to see where I'm going with this.
What if Rocks died at God Valley because he ate a second (or more) Devil Fruit?
Now, right now, we're not even 100% certain Rocks even HAS a Devil Fruit. But, I'd bet he probably does. And if there were other Devil Fruits on God Valley as prizes, it seems like Rocks would have had a chance to eat a second one...causing him to explode.
(Chapter 385)
That might explain why Garp and Roger had to team up to defeat Rocks. He might have been temporarily "supercharged" by having two Devil Fruit powers, right before he exploded.
We've never actually SEEN someone explode from eating two Devil Fruits before. And it would be something that would be nice to see before the end of the story. And it would give God Valley a "countdown" like Oda likes to add into his big battles.
It might also explain why God Valley was destroyed. We've assumed it was destroyed by eitehr a Buster Call, like Ohara, or because of the Ancient Weapon Uranos, much like Lulusia. But, God Valley occurred likely decades before Vegapunk developed the Mother Flame in order to recharge Uranos's laser. And the World Government would likely hesitate to use a Buster Call, due to so many Celestial Dragons and God's Knights being on the island. Something else causing the destruction of Lulusia would make sense. And a Devil Fruit explosion may just fit the bill.
Now, it's possible that Rocks has the natural ability to use two Devil Fruit powers, like his son Blackbeard can. But, we don't know that for sure. That power may come from Blackbeard's mother's side. Or it could be the result of something else we still don't know about. It's possible Rocks can't handle two Devil Fruits the way Blackbeard can. So, I think it's still possible for him to explode from eating two of them (or more).
And God Valley is actually a pretty well known event in the One Piece World. Supposedly, Big News Morgans got his start writing a story about God Valley for the newspaper. So, maybe the story of Rocks' fate is how most of the World learned how you shouldn't eat two Devil Fruits. There could be.."explosive" consequences!
And there's another side to this, too. Because, we've never really asked the question....what happens to the actual Devil Fruits after a person eats two of them at the same time?
Now, normally, a Devil Fruit is reincarnated in another nearby Fruit after it's User dies.
(Chapter 676)
But, that's for when a User with only one Devil Fruit dies. What happens to TWO Devil Fruits when their User EXPLODES?
This is a completely random thought. But, is it possible that the two, separate Devil Fruits could end up fusing together, becoming a new, singular Devil Fruit entirely? The "heat" and "power" of the explosion causing them to merge into ONE entity? Basically "cooking" the Devil Fruits together into one "dish" that gives the resulting entity a completely different "flavor".
Like imagine if some ate both the...let's say, the Flame Fruit and the Carrot Fruit. After they died, it would be reborn as a singular "Flaming Carrot" Devil Fruit.
Devil Fruits are really rare in the One Piece World, despite nearly half the cast we know having one. So, it's actually pretty rare for a User to ever get a chance to eat a second Devil Fruit. Such a thing has probably only ever happened a handful of times in history.
Is it possible that...THIS is the origin of Blackbeard's Darkness Fruit? Could the Darkness Fruit actually be a "Chimera" Fruit that's the result of Rock's Devil Fruit and a second one fusing together after Rocks exploded? That may somehow explain why Blackbeard can use multiple Fruits. Maybe a "Chimera" Fruit doesn't "count" as a Devil Fruit, so you can at least use a second one? Maybe Blackbeard could end up exploding himself, if he ever tries to eat a third one? Which would be a interesting way to end his storyarc.
Maybe this could even explain how Rocks' "soul" could still live on in Blackbeard. Maybe Rocks' "soul" ALSO got collapsed and trapped in this "Chimera" Fruit? Fused alongside the "spirits" of the two Devil Fruits.
Blackbeard has many unusual powers. Having a "Chimera" Fruit, may actually explain a few things.
I don't know. I find this to be a interesting idea. But, I'm not sure if I even buy this idea, myself. If anything, I'm still betting on Blackbeard's Darkness Fruit to be revealed to be a Secret God Fruit, like Luffy's. Specifically, the Sea God Fruit. But, this is just too interesting of a possibility to keep to myself.
Rocks just might go out...with a bang!
