"The legislation Lardizabal was referring to is PayUp, a 2022 law passed unanimously by the Seattle City Council that was intended to guarantee app-based drivers a “living wage” by mandating that drivers earn 74 cents per mile traveled and 44 cents per minute, or a minimum of $5 an order."

“I can’t pay rent. [Orders are] down 30 to 40%,” Lardizabal told a local radio station. “This is not a living wage; this is a dying wage.

"“It’s painfully clear from listening to Dashers, merchants and consumers that this new law simply isn’t working,” DoorDash said in a statement reported by Fox 13."

“Demand was dead,” said Illes, who told Fortune he has dumped food delivery apps entirely and has gone independent."

"“We’ve already seen a nearly 50 percent drop in third-party delivery app sales,” said Tonin Gjekmarkaj, owner of a local Albanian bakery and café called Byrek & Baguette."

"The Puget Sound Business Journal reported that Seattle City Council President Sara Nelson has already ordered staff to draft a proposal to amend the law.

“I believe that we created a problem and it’s our responsibility to fix it,” Nelson said."

It is funny to see how CONSUMERS, WORKERS and MERCHANTS complain about the tragical effects of the law yet people (mentally challenged) ask for data to comprove their claims. Even with the author of this tragic admiting guilty (good for him, very rare nowadays).

Once again governament proving to be inefficient at improving economics and hold back society years of improvement.

Interesting case, it's pretty much why under current economic "system(s)" (for the lack of a better word) government imposed wage controls and/or UBI are more than likely doomed to fail, all that eventually or faster than prognosed happens is inflation nullifying the raise of money you technically receive or even lowering your purchase power compared to before. Well that and often shit like in this Seattle case happens and many of these workers lose their jobs and there's basically no social welfare money in USA like in Germany, Sweden or other european countries either, so they're simply fucked if they don't find another job quickly enough.

Well wether wage controls or UBI could ever work is wether you think/believe that humanity will find a way to "prorperly" implement a working society and economy akin to marxist or broader socialist thoughts and that it's even possible, but that's another debate.

Governament control could never work because it can't respond to extreme situations in reasonable time. For example here in Brazil the price of water went up fast in the south because of the flooding. If there was a wage control the south would have no water at all by now. The free market controlling the price is necessary so the resources are allocated where the demand is bigger. If there is a crisis and a lot of water is needed than investments will be done in that area so more water can be provided. Governament can't do such things unless taking weeks, months or maybe even years only free market can do it as quick as possible.
