Character Discussion Shanks isn't necessarily a Celestial Dragon.

#1
After chapter 1086 and the introduction of saint Figarland Garling many people are jumping into two conclusions:

First, that Garling is a relative of Shanks, likely his father, because of Film Red's mention of the Figarland family in relation to Uta.

Second, that this would make Shanks a Celestial Dragon.

I beg to differ on the second conclusion: in my opinion, it's more likely that Shanks himself isn't a Celestial Dragon but Garling became one after God Valley. First and foremost, last arcs have given strong hints at the possibility of a person becoming a Celestial Dragon in spite of not belonging to the original founding families. Sterry tried to lure Garp into helping him turn into a Celestial and York was offered it in exchange of betraying Stella; if these characters accepted this "ascending" as a real possibility, then they must have some reason to do so.

Which leads us to Garling. This chapter revealed us that he was the former king of God Valley, a kingdom that doesn't exist anymore after the fall of Rocks. If Celestial Dragons aren't something, that's kings of their own kingdoms: they are families who by accepting the title of Celestial left their homes in order to move to Mary Geoise, being replaced by new royal families (such as the Riku family replacing the Donquixote family after the latter became Celestial). Garling being the king of God Valley and also a Celestial Dragon doesn't make much sense; what makes way more sense is that whatever Garling did in God Valley granted him the ascension to Celestial Dragon and turned him into a Saint, maybe alongside his family that followed him to Mary Geoise...

...where the issue arises: Shanks is probably a Figarland, but he left God Valley with Roger. Whatever happened that ended putting him into a chest, he would have left the island as a royal but not necessarily as a Celestial Dragon. In actuality he's a man raised by pirates, living as a pirate and serving as a political enemy of the Government by virtue of his status of emperor. His father becoming a Celestial after God Valley wouldn't necessarily make Shanks himself a Celestial too since he never ascended to Mary Geoise. This is also a way more interesting scenario than Shanks being a Celestial Dragon playing pirate, in my opinion.

Just a quick thought, anyways.

I wondered about this as well.

God’s Valley is interesting because of the name, and the fact Celestial Dragon’s + slaves were there. I wonder if it was an old traditional heartland of the Celestial Dragon’s, before they stole Marijois from the Lunarians. Basically, a holiday home for them, with the Figarland Family in charge.

I don’t think we can say “if there’s one thing we know about Celestial Dragons…” for anything other than we don’t know everything about the Celestial Dragons. The last two hundred odd chapters have made that clear. Garling has the authority to execute some, why can’t he be king of an island as well?

But for becoming one, I really think it would have to be through marriage. I’ve thought about adoption, but I‘m not sure I see a group of families who insist they rule by direct descent from accepting one who doesn’t have their blood in them. Marriage makes more sense, as a necessary part of continuing the bloodline, since I assume not all of them are born of slaves being raped.

And I just don’t see accepting an entire new family as being likely. Twenty families, we know about half, no more, no less.

I think they just tricked people into thinking they could become CDs. No confirmation that they would even turn them. Knights are traditionally fighters born from nobility and chosen by the monarch. So Holy Knights are probably people of CD heritage who can fight. Figarland seems to be extremely powerful, so they likely have been in high positions for ages else they wouldn't get this level of respect. Shanks certainly doesn't identify as a CD, though, just using his privileges to protect somebody he cares about doesn't mean he's evil or a rat like some are saying, though. He's more of a Sabo kind of noble.

I mentioned this before and the reason for Shanks' tears was that there was no treatment for Roger in raftel and he regretted it.
But the problem with the logic of my opinion was that Roger was as dangerous as Rocks, why should they kill him?:kayneshrug:
WG believed that legend about PK will die with Roger's death, as well as desire to find the One Piece. Roger ruined evetyrhing.

Nah the Figarland were likely part of the 20 kingdoms. The way the Gorosei talked about Uta in relation to the Figerland it sounded like they considered her part of the bloodline.

Also it was said that Garp was protecting CD's, so the civilians there were already CD including Shanks parents
