The last time we saw Smoker he was very demoralized, disappointed and injured while heading to Vegapank. Smoker once again couldn't protect his men because he wasn't strong enough, he had to rely on Law and Luffy, both of them are pirates. In Dressrosa we once again saw Smoker in Fuji's flashback disappointed in himself.
Smoker clearly has motivations to become stronger, but does he have the means? And here where I think Vegapank might come handy. Vegapank can make Smoker (a lot) stronger if he wants to, he has the means to do so, the question is why he would do that? I think that there are three plot points that might lead to this: 1. Smoker is injured, although the injuries don't seem to be series, but they might have some consequences. 2. Vegapank has created the SSG, we don't know what it is, put Smoker might play a crucial role in it. 3. Oda has to build the future replacements for the Marines, we already have Koby and Helmepo, but we need another one.
There are many ideas as to what the SSG can be, and one of them, is that they are a group of promising but wounded Marines, maybe without arms and legs, who have been upgraded by Megabank's tech which made them combat capable once again and a lot stronger. If we go with that idea, then Smoker getting an upgrade looks even more promising. What if Smoker crys to Vegapank about his failures and constant Ls, the fact that he can't protect his men etc. And Vegapank offers him a deal: Smoker to become the leader of this new Marine unit called SSG while in exchange Vegapank makes Smoker strong enough to compete against any pirate. If we compare the Shichinukais to the SSG, then we can see that SSG might be similar to them, with members that have different power levels–just like the Shichinukais–with Smoker being the strongest.
I'd like for Smoker to get an artificial DF on top of his already legitimate logia DF, I know that we still don't have conformation on whether artificial DFs can be consumed by DF usres or not, but it might be possible since artificial DFs are different. If it's possible, then that would boost Smoker quite a bit, plus a new weapon instead of his old one with more utility. For example: a sword that can use lasers, ice, Magma, maybe even gravity. What do you guys think?
