Theory Solving Mihawk’s origin story

#1
I know many of us are bought into the idea that Mihawk will have some connection to the God’s Knights, or even just the Celestial Dragons themselves, but I have a slightly different take that should actually shed light on his past and the mysteries surrounding it.

-

First we should clarify Mihawk’s relationship with the World Government. We know that Mihawk's beef is with the Marines, per him being the Marine Hunter and Oda’s SBS comment,
yet he actively joins the WG's military services as a warlord.

Every warlord has their reason for this, whether it's to plunder (moria, doffy, crocodile) or protect (boa, jinbe, kuma), and it’s almost always because of the powerful immunity and amnesty powers that Warlords are given- this allows them to protect their own people and homeland, or in some cases, to plunder other people’s homelands with no repercussion.

Mihawk will be no exception.

While Mihawk says he was simply tired of the chase from the Marines, I can’t take a comment like that at face value. Swallowing his pride to work for the same people he holds a grudge against should be a bigger decision for someone who’s all about swordsman's pride/honor in the first place. Not only that, but if he wanted to avoid the chase he could've just set up camp in an unaffiliated country, since you don't even need to be a Yonko or even an active pirate to do so- just look at Gabban and Rayleigh. It's clear that Mihawk actually did need the amnesty-granting power or the immunity for something that wasn’t as selfish, likely to protect something he cared about more than his pride..

I also find his grudge and mistrust very interesting, since he's one of the only characters in the series to specifically have beef with the Marines and not simply just the Celestial Dragons, or the WG as a whole. There's an explanation for this that ties into everything else we know about him:

Taking everything into account, and also adding the fact that Mihawk still has his Vivre Card origin as “unknown” this late into the game- which is rare, we even have the name of Blackbeard’s homeland now, among others- we can tell that Mihawk was actually a noble from an unaffiliated country that was destroyed or terrorized by the Marines. Maybe this was through the Marines empowering neighboring countries to go to war with them- or we could even say that there was an element of subterfuge that made Mihawk the untrusting person he is, like a civil war full of treachery.

Regardless, we know his background should be aristocratic since it's very clear that he's a bougie/uptight character in his mannerisms and presentation, and all the original warlords with their backstory revealed so far have ties to royalty (Doffy was a World Noble and the Donquixote’s ruled Dressrosa, Boa is Amazon Lily’s Empress, Kuma was Sorbet’s King, and Jinbei was Sea Knight of Neptune’s military). Plus that would it make it so the destruction of his homeland would hold even more meaning to his story.

Also, remember how I said he's using his Warlord status? Well, it would make sense if his status would allow him to preserve the ruins and memory of his homeland, which could even be Kuraigana Island, the island he settles on, an island that was wrecked by war until 7 years ago, when he came to it as a Warlord.

After all, the question is always gonna remain— why here? In a world with 10-20 million islands to choose from, why pick the island where there were so many corpses you couldn’t even find the room to stand?
This would literally mean that he had to get an island’s worth of corpses cleaned up, so why go through that effort for some random island?

And, again in a world with 10-20 million islands, how did the swordsman character with a bunch of crosses happen to choose the island full of swords and crosses?

What are the chances really?

And to cap it all off,

Perona’s request, which brought us here to begin with and introduced us to the island, was specifically to go to a gloomy old castle full of grudges- perfectly fitting with Mihawk’s unexplained resentment towards the Marines- and even just the fact that Mihawk could live anywhere in the world, yet chose to come (back) to live in something like that, should tell us just how much this place means to him.

So putting everything together, it seems clear that Mihawk’s backstory is that of an aristocrat who lost his kingdom of origin, on Kuraigana Island, to a war that the Marines were partially responsible for. Likely a civil war that left enough distrust for others to last till this day. Given how knights worked in real life, with their background often being as lesser nobles, and the Knight armor on the Humandril’s in Kuraigana Island,

It’s even possible that Mihawk was a knight for his homeland, meant to mirror his rival Shanks, as the Figarland family are clearly the premiere Knights for the Celestial Dragons.

Very interesting. This has potential.

Perhaps Mihawk's drive to become the World's Strongest Swordsman was born from an inability to protect himself and his people. And his need for a quiet life may be associated with his PTSD.

It's possible his attacks on pirates like Don Krieg may be a way of lashing out at people similar to the ones who brought war to his home as per your theory.

Has he ever shown signs of disliking any of the current Admirals? Sakazuki, Borsalino or Kuzan may have been involved with this perhaps.
