Man, I read Bleach in like 2015 and knew about the Aizen turn and I still got surprised with how hard a misdirect Kubo shot us through that arc.

It's such a rich arc that gives almost every character it introduces focus and respect. Byakuya & Gin seem like end game bosses there as you have the politics of Soul Society unraveling before the B-team of Toshiro, Momo, Rangiku and Kira. Rukia's acceptance of her death, the Ryoka Invasion and their struggles as they progress through the literal ranks of the Gotei..

I'd pick reading this fresh over Ennis Lobby any day.

Ennies Lobby is better

1. Iirc it is the first time Straw Hats had serious internal conflict (Usopp vs Luffy and Robin leaving the crew).
Comparison to Soul Society, Gotei 13 had internal conflict too like Gin vs Hitsugaya, Kenpachi vs Komamura + Tosen, Yamamoto vs Ukitake + Kyoraku and Aizen pulling the string from shadow. Yet by the time both arc came, I think readers feel way closer with the Straw Hats already than Gotei 13 Captains (Soul Society is only second arc while OP already had long adventure before Ennies Lobby) so Straw Hats' conflict felt more personal.

2. Most of main characters got a big match up in Ennies Lobby. Luffy revealed gears, Zoro got Asura, Chopper revealed Monster Point etc.
Only Usopp didn't get big fight but he got Sogeking moment (way better than God Usopp imo) and burning the flag.
In comparison to Soul Society, it kinda felt more like WCI than Ennies Lobby: only the MC Ichigo got big fights one after another (Ikkaku, Renji, Kenpachi, Byakuya) while the others got sidelined, especially Chad, which at that point was still portrayed as 1 of Ichigo's Monster Trio team along with Ishida.
Straw Hats got better focus than Ichigo's original 5 team in SS arc. Monster Point was really cool back then.

3. The ending for Ennies Lobby is far more rewarding.
Usopp came back, Robin came back, Franky joined, and they got a new ship. As a stand alone arc, that ending feels more satisfying imo than Soul Society arc, which revealing Aizen betrayal and only became a set up for the future arcs.

People are really biased on these threads, huh?
Ennies Lobby is "half an arc".
It is entirely dependent on the emotional build up that happens during the entire Water7, and, as such, should not be evaluated separately.

At least say something like "CP9 saga" or whatever.
:kuzanope:

One Piece bodies Soul Society, btw. Great arc, but the pay off for a lot of the characters introduced only comes waaaay later in the series. Most of the characters are actually jobbers and, aside from Ishida, it was the "beginning of the Kurousaki show".

Soul society. Love the invasion style structure to it, deep in unknown territory not knowing who you're gonna come across. Also love the fact that the arc also becomes a mystery thriller as your trying to figure out who murdered
Aizen (lol)
and then it hits you with that iconic twist ending which I'll never forget. The cast in this arc were incredibly, especially the likes of Byakuya and Gin, the first time Ichigo goes Bankai will remain iconic and his fight wih Byakuya is still my fav fight in the entire series because it has the most weight to it.

Yeah Water 7 and Ennies lobby are literally inseparable if you leave ennies lobby by itself it feels like a generic shonen arc which isn't bad by anymeans.

Water 7 sets up the action of ennies lobby and thats why that whole section of one piece is peak shounen ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Even without including the post arc of ennies lobby which is goated.

I got spoiled on the Aizen stuff but it was still a great twist even though I knew it was coming.

Enies lobby...soul society is a fuckin amazing arc but enies lobby had everything, merrys funeral, robins backstory and "i wanna live" alone were more impactful and well written than the whole soul society arc
