Hello everyone,
Pretty short post today but this is a feat that never gets discussed, and this was one of the moments for me that made Gyou’Un my second favorite Zhao commander and my favorite arc antagonist in Kingdom. And that is, of course, Gyou’Un vs Gunei. I wanted to analyze this brief battle because I literally never see anyone discussing this scene. So let’s do this:
Right off the bat, Hara is establishing who Gunei is and what he is capable of. So, a few things:
We never actually learn what Gunei’s exact rank is. Is this guy a 5,000 man commander? Is he just a strategist/tactician under Akou? It’s unclear, but it is interesting that this guy can use Ousen’s tactics (although he’s not perfect with them. How many minor commanders in the Ousen army have we met that can use Ousen’s tactics? The answer is none of them lol, even the likes of Denrimi and Sou’Ou are not confirmed to be able to do this. So is Gunei like the equivalent of a general? I mean how many 5000 man commanders have we heard of that can replicate GG level tactics?
I would think Gunei is supposed to be a general, or one of those nebulous ranks that is simply general caliber.
And so how does Gunei fair against Gyou’Un?
And yeah, Gyou’Un just demolishes him.
We learn that Gunei has spent 45 years on the battlefield, which again adds to my speculation that this guy is probably a general. He also seems to use some relatively advanced ploys involving deception, which again suggests this guy isn’t some basic tactician when you recall that he can use Ousen’s tactics.
And then of course:
I know Gyou’Un’s caliber of general, the Heavenly King level generals, are like low to mid level Great Generals in ability, but this feat still stands out to me. Gunei seemed to me to be significantly stronger than the average general, IE guys like Eibei, Ryouyou Heki, maybe Ryuukoku/Rinbou, etc…I mean, can guys like these use Ousen(ish) level tactics?
And yet Gyou’Un horribly negged his “ploys” and one shot him in overwhelming fashion.
I hope Hara shows us a flashback of the Rinshoujou army in its prime at some point. A prime Gyou’Un would have been a sight to see.
