This is the first time we are learning of a disease from Mariejois. It’s distinct in that it’s sunlight related (Moonlight is just sunlight reflected off the moon)
This brings back the theories that Sunlight Tree Eve is up in Mariejois and I think Sunlight Tree Eve is what is causing this disease.
In Skypiea we learned that trees can give people illnesses and this Sunlight related illness is probably from the Eve Tree, that tree that has weird Sun properties
Also two interesting questions, why don’t the Celestial Dragons just cut down the tree? And why don’t Celestial Dragons just kill the slaves who have the disease, why do they have this “compassionate release” type thing going on for slaves specifically for this Eve Tree disease?
I think the answer to both of these is the same answer as in Skypiea regarding why the Shandorans were sacrificing people to get rid of their Tree disease. SUPERSTITION
I think there’s some kind of Superstition in Mariejois regarding the Eve Tree being like super important or something and like if you get the Eve Tree’s sunlight disease it’s like got to do with the Eve Tree picking you to get the disease. Remember it’s highly unlikely that Celestial Dragons themselves never got this disease too. So what do Celestial Dragons who think they are a literal superior race do when they get a disease? They make up reasons for why they have it.
I think someone high up in the Celestial Dragon hierarchy (Gorosei or Imu) made it a rule that the Sunlight Tree Eve CANNOT be cut down for whatever reason, and so this disease that comes from this Eve Tree was like “justified” in some way to be some kind of Divine punishment and so when ANYONE acquires it, including “wife slaves”, there is like a procedure of isolating them different from the usual killing the celestial dragons would do.
also the regular slaves in Mariejois probably do not get Sapphire scale because they are mostly kept underground working to keep the surface people comfortable. And because the slaves are mostly underground, they have less Exposure to the Sunlight Tree eve so they don’t actually get this disease. Ginny and Bonney only got the disease because Ginny was a “wife” so she spent most of her time on the surface alongside the rest of the CDs getting exposed to the Disease.
