The way they explained powers and techniques to the MC
Their ways of teachings was also fleshed out on panelsn (not offscreened to be used as excuses for asspulls in flashbacks) and given real focus and importance.
They are also interesting characters on their own, the dynamics between them and their students is natural.

Makarov is by far the best

He was the master of fairy tail for years he's helped them all grow and develop not just as wizards but as people, he taught them what it means to be a family, that blood doesn't make you family it's the bonds you build together that make you a family, he's always willing to die for his family always ready to go band for band to protect his family, he'll never abandon his family and he taught all of Fairy Tail that same value and instilled great morals into each and every member
