Okay, this might be a stretch. And I might be jumping the gun on this a little early, given we only get one page with Rocks. But, just in case I'm right, I want to be able to say I called this.
It's been a pretty common theory that Blackbeard is associated with the number 3. He's got 3 Skulls on his Jolly Roger. He's got 3 guns strapped around his waist. He's got 3 braids in his beard. And it's pretty likely that he'll end up with one of each of the 3 different types of Devil Fruits by the end of the story.
But, we've just learned who's Blackbeard's father is. Rocks D Xebec. And this could be apophenia, but it seems to me like Rocks could be associated with the number 2.
Rocks' hair is 2 different colors. Rocks is introduced holding up 2 fingers. And asking 2 questions. He may or may not have two sides to his face, which some are speculating reflects Buggy and Blackbeard. It's not a LOT to go on, but it does feel like it could be something Oda is seeding early.
So, if we assume Blackbeard is associated with the number 3, and his father is associated with the number 2, that implies a certain something. Somewhere in Blackbeard's lineage, there should be another ancestor who's associated with the number 1.
Oda is actually giving us another countdown, like he enjoys doing. Such as on Egghead, or other islands to build tension. Only this time we might be counting down to the reveal of the "Original Blackbeard".
Now, who could this be? Well...chances are it's just someone completely new, who we've never seen before. Someone from Joyboy or Nika's time who hasn't been revealed yet. Maybe one of Joyboy's "wings"? Maybe a rival to Nika? I suppose it could even be Joyboy himself, since he was the FIRST pirate, and that would associate him with the number 1. But, chances are it's someone else.
So, this is just to say, we might be getting more about Blackbeard's family line in the future. Probably revealing another ancestor farther in the past somewhere that's associated with the number 1. I suppose we might even get a ancestor who's even FURTHER back who's associated with the number 0. Especially, if that ties into the "Void" powers of the Darkness Fruit, or some sort of desire to "reset the world to zero" or some-such that this family line has as a shared goal.
...This was a bit sort (for me) so, here's a bonus observation. Besides, this doesn't really deserve it's own thread. It's just a weird thing I've suddenly noticed.
Take a closer look at Blackbeard's pants.
Seriously...look at them.
His pants have a flower pattern on them. And those "flowers" might look a little familiar to you.
Because those "flowers" actually match a pattern we see on one of the "moons" in the Chapter 1138 Mural.
Above the larger "main" moon, there's actually two other smaller "mini-moons". In between the text boxes for the First and Second World. Both of these mini-moons have different patterns on them. One is a "Arrow" pattern, which matches the pattern on the "Hellflame Serpent" and the "Ancient Giant" on the right and left sides of the Mural.
But, the other mini-moon has a "flower" pattern on it. A "flower" pattern that just so happens to match Blackbeard's pants!
Which can only mean...Blackbeard's pants are from outer space!!!
...Or that Blackbeard's family line has some connection to this other "mini-moon". Maybe this does lend some credence to the idea that the different races of the One Piece World actually did come from different planets? Maybe something happened to different "moon colonies" that the Ancient Kingdom were creating on different celestial bodies? Either way, this is potentially...something. Or maybe it's nothing. Time will tell. I just find it interesting.
And it would actually make a bit of sense, because we've seen before in SBS for volume 63, Blackbeard does seem to have some sort of tie to at least one of these "moons".
So, yes, not only is Oda setting up a very subtle countdown in the background of the story. But, it might just eventually lead us to a story involving outer space. Kind of fitting, if I'm right.
