After a long hiatus from anime, manga, and forums. I was rewatching the anime episode where Roger informs his crew about their new destination, Laugh Tale. It was Buggy, the first one to react with a jump of excitement before catching the mystery disease. Later in the same episode he wakes up from bed to convince Roger to take him along, while Shanks calling him a monster and more than anything even Oden comments about his bravery.
Lets jump forward in time to the beginning of the epic journey of our protagonists. When Buggy crossed their path multiple times, he was portrayed as neither brave nor as a monster but as an evil, scheming, and weak pirate living an existence of a tyrant on a small town in remote part of East Blue. What made Buggy's character different from his time with Roger's pirates. I am trying to theorize and explore that.
If Buggy was much weaker than Shanks, then there was no question of who being the captain of the crew they envisioned together before splitting up. They were not able to resolve this because they were equal.
It has been shown that Buggy's body parts can survive without him even they were separated from him by a long distance when Luffy sends chibi-buggy flying to another island leaving behind his body parts.
Here is my theory:
I think young Buggy intentionally separated his ambition, bravery, and his memories about the true nature of his powers after a big incident. I think this might be because of the destruction of Orojackson, a nakama for Roger Pirates, by Buggy's fruit powers. What would be Buggy's true powers? In his awakened state he can split the objects around him to sub-atomic level releasing immense energy. When you think about this, Buggy's finale is Buggy bomb which foreshadows his power.
I think by accident Buggy delivery members will discover a treasure that will turn out to be his memories, ambition and bravery locked away by Buggy himself, who left his fate to goddess luck. Who is more favorite to luck than our flashy buffoon.
When Buggy reveal his dreams that he can't stow away thereby inspiring and impressing Mihawk and Crocodile emotionally. I think he will inspire them once again when he finds his true treasure. When this happens Mihawk will remember his conversation with Shanks about his rival before Mihawk, who Shanks has called as a monster but he is "not the same person anymore".
When Luffy, after defeating Blackbeard, is about to reach Laugh Tale will confront Buggy and his crew where Mihawk clashes with Zoro for the title of the "World's Strongest Swordsman", Crocodile will fight against his elusive rival Sanji, who has a beef with Crocodile as Mr. Prince for the title "Ruler of Underworld" and Luffy and Buggy clashes to find who is the true inheritor of Roger's will.
In the sidelines of this fight, Mihawk comments the fight between their captains as combat between the two individuals with the strongest power in the sea: the power to turn enemies into friends in unlikely situations.
When we think about it Roger and Luffy shares three important qualities or powers: a childlike admiration for the world and ambition, power to win allies, and power to hear all things. It coincides with what powers each youngling in Rogers ship has: Shanks - a childlike admiration for the world and ambition, Buggy - power to win allies, Momonosuke - voice of all things. But Luffy, has all three.
After an intense battle for days, Luffy defeats his final threshold guardian between him and One Piece. Buggy accepts Luffy as the true successor to his captain and apologies to Luffy for not being able to save his brother, and his captain's son.
This will be a bookend finish of Luffy's pirate saga where the Straw Hats first pirate enemy is also their last but matured in a way they didn't imagine. Luffy after this conquers the Grandline and the pirates, revolutionaries, discriminated races, and allied kingdoms of Straw Hat Pirates clashes with World Government in the climax to decide the course of the history and Buggy will shine flashily as a Legend, this time in real.
