At first, I thought Garling had brought Shanks/Shamrock to God Valley for the Human Hunt; now we know he picked them up there.
Because of this, I assumed Sommers had lost a child, or parent, on God Valley.
Now, I no longer believe this, and believe something simpler and more sinister: we've already seen, Celestial Dragon's children be attacked, over their parents.
This is Doflamingo's flashback in a nutshell: and I think Sommers is the reverse.
Doffy's mother died; Sommers' child was murdered.
Sommers most likely destroyed someone's family, and, in response, they took Sommers' family: his child.
Ever since, Sommers has been obsessed with murdering parents via their children, so they can feel the pain he did when he lost his child.
This is also why we have yet to see a single Celestial Dragon child in the modern era: they are kept within the Castle in the Holy Land, so they aren't threatened by the outside world.
Obviously, this incident would be covered up. Sommers' loving his child, then having them die because of his own evil, is tragic writing, that almost mirrors Senor Pink in an incredibly twisted way, which fits since the Doflamingo Family is run by a former Celestial Dragon.
It's also possible Sommers' wife died in this incident, but, yeah. Someone wanted revenge on Sommers for destroying their family, and then took his, continuing the parenthood theme of God Valley and Elbaph.
