Luffy was the person the Gomu Gomu was based off. His fruit is a mythical zoan of himself after he went back in time and became Joyboy
Imu is a crewmate of Luffy's who ended up in a bad timeline and became evil as a result. This is also why he/she never pursued Luffy for having the Gomu Gomu, instead choosing to let him ride out the course he went on in the prior timelines.

One Piece ends with Luffy breaking free from the time loop by destroying the time machine on Laugh Tale

I love this concept of coming full circle, breaking time loop stuff. I hope there is something like that in Imu and Luffy's story.

I for one hope that Imu is someone who has met Luffy before, but Oda deliberately made us not pay attention to him to be a final villain. For example one of my hopium is for Law to actually be Imu all along, and he just tag along to observe Luffy's development to Gear 5 so that he can use that ability to unlock something, etc etc. When Luffy not looking he just teleported back to Flower Chamber etc.

The same case for Shanks, if Shanks is Imu i would love it absolutely as well. Yeah but basically i'm just hoping for one of the two of my very favorite character to become Luffy's final enemy, signifying their role.
