Initially there was only one piece. Then I think at some point the piece was split into lesser pieces.
Imu obtained one part of the piece, using it to become a God. Nika/Joyboy had the other. Outside of these two, I think it’s possible there could be other pieces. Maybe the ancient weapons, something on the moon, idk.
Anyways Joyboy collected half of the piece and put it on laugh tale. This is the meaning of D. D is a semicircle, half of a circle, half of a piece.
Throughout history, Nika has tried repeatedly to unite the pieces, but he always failed, leading to the destruction of the world. This is why Harley Harley talked about “they will never meet” and “they will finally meet”. It is referring to the pieces meeting to form One Piece.
In this final iteration, Luffy will ultimately succeed at uniting the pieces into One Piece.
As to the intricacies of what the pieces are or how they work. I can’t say, but I’ll go out on a limb and say Oda was inspired by Dragon ball.
When you collect all the dragon balls, you can make a wish. Then the balls split up. The pieces might be similar in concept, though they might not outright grant wishes.
Id also guess you can use part of a piece’s power without having the full one piece. My guess is this is what Imu does.
