Imagine being a new recruit and on your first mission you are captured by a Yonko and told "lol good luck," from your commanding officer. I get that they can't attack a Yonko but its like he couldn't even negotiate with them like hey instead of the men I'll give you 4 battleships. If those marines had been taken they likely would have been tortured and had inhumane things done to them, why are the VAs constantly being bullied into submission?

It was really just Oda’s convoluted way of trying to set up Garp going to Hachinosu.
The entire Blackbeard/Koby plot still doesn’t make a lot of sense. It was just a badly written way to get the characters into conflict, so Yamakaji’s stupidity and even the bizarre explanation for SWORD is part of it.
