This isn't my theory. But, I just wanted a excuse to share this video from Joy Boy Theories because I think it makes some good points and connections that I think make sense.
Basically, it might not be Big Mom's fault that she is the way she is. She may have gotten "drunk" on the Island Clouds that surround Elbaph, because the Island Cloud may be the "Soul Energy" from The Mural. She, and possibly the Strawhats now, are showing signs of addiction. A addiction to the Dreams of the Dead!
Also, the Giant Trees might be "absorbing" this same energy from the Island Clouds and causing some of the mutations we see from different races. And that the "needles" of Whiskey Peak being graves foreshadowed the Giant Trees being made up of souls.
He also makes a interesting point about the sea possibly being treated like the afterlife. So Devil Fruit Users are being depowered because the "ghosts" inside of them are being dragged back home to "Davy Jones' Locker".
There is one big hole in this theory. If eating Fruit from the mutated soul-eating Trees make you grow larger...then does that mean that NO ONE on Skypeia ever ate any Fruit? That's not a very balanced diet.
But, that's a relatively minor quibble. It's a pretty interesting theory overall that I think has some merit.
