Well I never thought I would care to make another theory again after Oro Jackson but I am seriously bored and I had an idea so here I am. Don't expect much effort since I still don't care much for this series anymore. Also, since I don't check the theory community anymore then someone else might have thought of this already, in which case GG to them.
Right, so back in Sky Island Arc, we had a flashback about trees. Calgara's people thought trees held people's souls.
We know souls do in fact very much exist in One Piece between the devil fruit powers of people like Brook, Moria and Linlin.
Vegapunk talked about devil fruits being people's hopes or whatever gobbledygook.

Devil fruits are considered possessed by a supernatural being.
In short, the theory is that devil fruits are the result of haunted trees possessed by the souls of people from the past that had some desire to fulfil in the world of the living still and put their hopes or themselves or whatever into a cursed fruit in order to try and carry on their will from beyond the grave, maybe influencing the current host or something.
Well, that's a wrap.
