Public Executions seem insanely common in One Piece; however, they seem to consistently have the opposite effect of their intentions.
1. Gol D. Roger
Public executions are designed to instill fear and ensure order by showing the might of the executors, in Gol D. Rogers case, that’s the World Government. However, Roger’s execution had an opposite effect. Because of the World Governments vanity in trying to show that not even the pirate king is above the WGs purview, Roger was able to live on as legend for starting the Great Pirate Era destabilizing the world more than anyone’s done in centuries.
2. Portgas D. Ace
Similar with Roger, the execution of Ace was an attempt to show the world that the blood of the pirate king and the protection of the Worlds Strongest Man won’t make the marines back down and that the world can put their trust in them. However, just like with Roger’s execution this backfired as not only did it allow Whitebeard to be seen the world over reigniting the Great Pirate Era by confirming the OPs existence, it also allowed a new threat to emerge in Blackbeard claiming the beginning of his era and showing the world that the power of the gura lives on in him.
3. Kozuki Oden
On a much much smaller scales than the others; Odens public execution created the hour of legends which ignited the people’s faith in the Kozuki which led to the rebellion of Wanos samurai.
Because of how much emphasis Oda puts in the public execution of these pivotal players in the verse it leads to a question, is that what happened to Joyboy? And if so, what did he do to turn it to his advantage?
In my opinion I think there’s no question that Joyboy had a public execution where Imu attempted to show the countries loyal to the ancient kingdom (Wano, Elbaf, Jaya, maybe others) that the World Government won and that the Ancient Kingdom is finished. The thing is Joyboy, like the others mentioned likely used this execution to make a proclamation. In my opinion it was probably along the lines of, “The Dawn will rise again!” A simple line that would’ve signaled to the countries I mentioned before, that there’s no reason to lose hope and to know that Joyboy will return.
What do yall think he said? Or do you think he was never executed in the first place?
