I mean Ashura knew Oden could knock people out without fighting but he called it "Oden's technique", and Oden looked surprised when Whitebeard told him he wasn't someone who would serve under someone. We also never saw him actively use it.

He should have been given he was no rookie. This is how it usually works going by statistics, but I guess Oda simply didn't like that prospect and perhaps Oden didn't manage to witness that due no one helping him doing that. There are several chances. This one possibility looks quite contrived sadly.
