Theory: Weapon gains sentiency through an extension of one's will and turns into a black blade
To begin, we know that one of the most important lessons that Zoro was taught during the timeskip training with Mihawk is armament haki, and to treat every chip on his sword as a shame. He must master armament haki to protect his swords from any damage, so that what happened with the Rust user does not happen again.
We also know that haki is like an extension of ones will. In fact, we know that when Luffy was training to use the advanced level of haki, or Ryuo, he had to let his haki flow through his body and to be pushed outwards, not to be encapsulated into his hand. This allows the haki to flow from his body, and deal internal damage.
Enma has been with Oden through many battles, and we know that Oden has used haki many times with Enma. Cursed blades are only named that because people fear how well forged they are as indicated by Kozaburo in Zoro's flashback. So with this knowledge, it may be the case that Enma is not forged as a sentient being that is taking all of Zoro's haki when he uses it, but instead, it shares a lot of characteristics with Oden, as the sword itself reacted to Hiyori's playing of the Shamisen, and Kaido commented that the blade gives off signals of Oden's haki. Its personality may portray that of an extension of Oden.
Now with that knowledge, it would seem that as Oden used more and more haki with Enma, perhaps more and more of his will encapsulated Enma and in a way, embodied Enma. The Enma that Zoro is using now may seem to have a mind of its own at sorts because of Oden's will. In a way, since Haki is an extension of one's will, once used enough with a blade, the blade itself becomes an extension of one's will.
Now onto black blades, what if it is the case that Enma is still incomplete. It needed more in order to fully become a black blade, or a full extension of one's will, or combination of wills. What if this may be the first black blade in history that would have a combination of wills rather than just one will, namely, Oden's will and Zoro's will.
Some may ask, in that case, why couldn't Shanks, Roger, or Whitebeard, basically, people who are very proficient in Haki make black blades? Well, this goes back to another theory that Mihawk's Yoru is actually originally a great grade blade. Since we know that turning a weapon into a black blade increases its grade rank, then perhaps Yoru became a supreme grade blade after its rank increased when Mihawk turned it into a black blade.
Moreover, perhaps turning a blade into a black blade has to do as well with being very familiar with how to forge blades, or at least be very in tune with how to shape a blade to such a degree that its rank can be increased. In that case, since Roger and Whitebeard's blades were already supreme grade blades before even becoming a black blade, then perhaps it is just that much more difficult to turn the blade into a black blade. In fact, it may be so difficult that no one in One Piece history has ever done it before, and that is maybe why we don't have any grade higher than supreme grade.
Side Note: What else do we know that seems almost Sentient and we have questions around? Devil Fruits. And we know that Zoans have a will of their own, so it may be the case that the process of making a black blade and the process of making Zoan devil fruits, or perhaps all devil fruits, are similar, where Devil Fruits may be the extension of one's will, or Haki.
This is not just limited to swords, rather, any weapon in the One Piece world can become a black blade, because it seems to be a process of a weapon gaining sentiency through being an extension of one's will, or a combination of wills.
Just wanted to add that: Perhaps Haki or will is a way for one to live on after they die.
