There's an spinoff manga where shanks also appears called one piece, there are some easy to miss clues there like him holding a sword and being rival to the greatest swordsman and some other minor things
The promo for the movie red said something like "See swordsman Shanks in action" and he was the strongest swordsman's rival.
Also, I invite you to do a logical reasoning, in every battle situation he went through he always started drawing his sword, for example, he didn't stop Akainu with one arm with haki. Don't you think that makes him a swordsman?
All of the above but we have one from the story itself that "most" knows but still won't believe in.
Mihawk = Strongest "Swordman" and he is "looking" for another swordman to fight against. The moment "Shanks" lost "an arm" Mihawk stopped fighting in general.
So If Mihawk is bored and not fighting right now means that there is no "Swordman" to challenge him like "Shanks" was.
Which confirms from the story itself that "Shanks" is a "Swordman".
Now lets pretend this comment never existed and continue ignoring the fact that the story itself presents to us.
Technically everyone who uses sword is a swordsman, this alone is enough. Sword in this refers to everything bladed weapons like those no name characters I forgot with machete and sabers.
