noun
the action of estimating or concluding something by assuming that existing trends will continue or a current method will remain applicable.
"sizes were estimated by extrapolation"
MATHEMATICS
the extension of a graph, curve, or range of values by inferring unknown values from trends in the known data.
"extrapolation of the logarithmic curve yielded an estimate of 66 species"

Note: When you take something from the story and estimate or conclude something by assuming that existing trends will continue or a current method will remain applicable you are extrapolating. I urge you to avoid doing this as a reader because the story elements often evolve and they are intended to be somewhat confusing to begin with. It's a futile practice.

In One Piece, extrapolating can be a good tool.

For example, we can hypothesize the fact that Oda's way of writing emotions through Luffy and the way he will outline his different story arcs will pretty much remain the same since those two parameters have never really changed during the course of One Piece.

Now, we must be careful with it indeed, because while the foundations of the story might not be so mobile, the surfaces constantly evolves.

Storylines might steer the narration in directions we can't expect, character might be more relevant than we think, status might not be as clear as they appear, battles might not have the same purposes and structures etc.

Overall. I think we can allow ourself to extrapolates on very foundamentals narrative principles and value in the story, but I agree with you on the fact that is a risky business.

Especially when those extrapolations create illegitimate expection that can only end with dissapointment and hate.
