General & Others What should Whitebeard have done about Teach?

#1
The hot topic today is whether it was a mistake for Oden to choose the path of peace.

A situation with some loose parallels was Teach killing Thatch and deserting the WB pirates. WB typically would’ve ensured the death of someone who killed a nakama. In this case, he had a “bad feeling” that Teach was an unusual threat.

Despite that, behind the scenes, WB didn’t want Ace to go after him and told him to “let it go.” Shanks expected that Teach would come for WB’s position, and WB’s dying thought was about his crew having to deal with Teach.

So if WB and Shanks knew Teach was bad news, why not crush him ASAP rather than waiting for him to gain power?

From Shanks perspective:

Shanks has known Teach is bad news for years, ever since he scarred him. But Teach also had Whitebeard's protection. Shanks is a peacekeeper, he couldn't attempt to murder one of Whitebeard's sons without provoking all out war.

From Whitebeard's perspective:

Logistically, quite hard for him to go after Teach. He was in the wind after murdering Thatch. Whitebeard sends too many people to try and find Teach, chance that the other Yonko or the Marines take advantage.

There's also the fact that Teach is an unknown threat, probably even to Whitebeard. Unless he himself goes after him, no guarantee that he won't lose another son to Teach. Like Kaido said to Oden, Whitebeard is a bit "soft" in that regard. And as we saw, Whitebeard's big hope for the future ended up captured by Teach.

Finally, for both of them, they are more aware of Teach's background and the Will of D than we are. I think this is where the uneasiness felt by Whitebeard comes into play. He was on Rocks crew. He knows the true history. I'm not sure if ever describe Whitebeard as scared, per se, but I think he was getting that gut feeling that centuries of history are coming to ahead in recent times, and that Blackbeard is going to be at the heart of the storm (with Luffy).

Well let-s see WB was in a pirate crew where they killed each other, by not giving BB any support now that he did this crime he probably thought BB will not made it by himself let-s not forget the dude probably didn-t showed everything he got while being in the crew.

Shanks did the right thing and told WB to take actions because BB was way stronger than WB thought

if he attacked while BB was in WB crew or still some what protection a war would have started

The only explanation I can see as to why both WB and Shanks didn't bother with Bb is that they know more stuff about the D then we do; I hope Oda has a good explanation.
Something along the lines of ''only a D can take down another D or something''

Whitebeard probably didn't feel the need to waste resources tracking Blackbeard down. After all the One Piece world is a big place and Blackbeard could have hid himself pretty well. Shanks also doesn't like to involve himself in others affairs if he can avoid it. That's why he didn't attack the mountain bandits at the beginning of the story until they threatened Luffy.

the way I see it WB would have handled it the same way Shanks suggested.
he only put up a front in their conversations.
Ace went after BB even though WB thought it was a bad idea.

but he is WB. he can not have Shanks make suggestions for him and let Ace lose face.
WB tried to prove Shanks that he is still making the rule and no one else. Shanks did not know what was going on behind the scenes and his suggestion was exactly the way WB himself would have handled it.

they did not know BB was bad news while in WBs crew. only after he broke the iron rule on WBs ship.

1 option was to hold Ace back forcefully, but he did not want to do that.

I think what separates the Oden-Orochi problem and the Newgate-Shanks-Teach problem is that the latter was an incident that was only slowly growing into something they could no longer control. Shanks in particular was only working on a hunch. The most similar example to that would be Oden's and Orochi's relationship before Oden set out to sea. By the time he returned, he already knew full well Orochi was bad news.

Regardless of how he felt after Thatch was murdered, Whitebeard clearly can’t bring himself to hate his sons when they lose their way (like with Squard during the war)...I wonder if that played a role in his inaction, that even though Blackbeard committed a cardinal sin amongst their organization, some small part of him still saw Teach as a son after all those years.

Otherwise, he probably felt that nobody else could take BB down after he left the ship and didn’t wanna intentionally send his other children to die.
