"I was reading the story of Jesus casting the demons into a herd of pigs (Mark 5:1–20, also in Matthew 8 and Luke 8), and it struck me how valuable those pigs must have been.

According to Mark, there were about 2,000 pigs. That’s not just a small herd but a large-scale commercial operation. In the Roman world, a single pig could be worth around 30-100 (+) denarii, and one denarius was the typical wage for a day’s labor.

That means the herd could have been worth 200,000 denarii. Over 500 years’ worth of wages for one person (!!!!). In today’s terms, that could easily be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. But in the ancient world, the loss would have been even more shocking.

This makes Jesus’s actions even more beautiful. He was willing to cause a massive economic loss to save one man. Not just any man, this man had created serious problems for the community. He was so violent and uncontrollable that he had been forced to live alone. Deeply tormented and self-destructive, he cried out day and night and cut himself with stones. Yet Jesus, met him in his brokenness, cast out the demons, and restored him to his right mind.

If that’s not a story of God’s grace and love for us humans, what is? "
